Hardwood is the most popular flooring material that we sell at Floor Coverings International of St. Petersburg. Our customers that live in the greater St. Petersburg FL area value its strength as much as its beauty. New hardwood is a significant investment, but if you follow these simple maintenance tips, your hardwood will continue to provide gorgeous warmth for generations.
1. Sweep your hardwood.
Sweeping or vacuuming is one of the most important things you can do to protect your hardwood. The dirt, dust, and other debris that forms a layer on top of your hardwood wear down its finish over time. By removing these contaminants, you can add years between refinishings. We suggest vacuuming or sweeping at least once per week—more if you have pets.
2. Utilize rugs and mats.
Your floors don’t experience an even amount of wear throughout. In other words, some parts will experience more foot traffic—and thus wear—than others. In busy parts of the home, such as living rooms, hallways, and entryways, invest in a floor mat or area rug.
3. Keep your shoes off indoors.
Shoes are designed to protect our feet from the outside, not the inside. In fact, shoes can track in dirt and small stones that can hurt our feet—and our hardwood flooring—later. Institute a shoes-off policy in your house.
4. Use felt furniture pads.
Whenever you have a piece of furniture, whether it is a couch, chair, or table, resting on hardwood, be sure that there are furniture pads protecting any point that is touching the hardwood. Heavy pieces of furniture can seriously mar hardwood.
